Kazakhstan develops mineral fertilizer production

The development of domestic mineral fertilizer production is one of the key directions for ensuring the country's food security, reducing import dependency, and strengthening the export potential of Kazakhstan's chemical industry. Today, Kazakhstan is implementing a number of major investment projects aimed at creating modern production facilities, manufacturing high-value-added products, and developing the processing industry.

The development institutions of the Baiterek Holding finance projects of strategic importance to the economy on the principles of repayability, payability, and urgency. Each initiative undergoes comprehensive financial, legal, and technical due diligence, assessing the project's economic efficiency, the availability of sufficient collateral, its implementation prospects, and its contribution to the development of priority sectors of the economy. Financing is carried out in accordance with current internal procedures and does not constitute non-repayable state support.

Mineral fertilizers are divided into three main groups: nitrogen, phosphate, and potash fertilizers. Kazakhstan has historically had a well-developed phosphate fertilizer industry, while the development of nitrogen and potash fertilizer production is one of the priority directions for the country's further industrialization.

One of the largest projects in this area is the construction of a modern integrated chemical complex by KazAzot Prime LLP, which envisages the production of 660,000 tonnes of ammonia, 577,500 tonnes of urea, and 500,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate per year. The launch of the complex will more than triple Kazakhstan's ammonia production capacity, create the country's first industrial urea production facility, and significantly reduce dependence on nitrogen fertilizer imports.

Part of the output will be directed to the domestic market to meet the needs of agriculture and industry, while surplus volumes of urea and ammonium nitrate will be exported. The project envisages the creation of 1,500 jobs during the construction phase and 700 permanent jobs after the plant is commissioned. Annual tax revenues to the budget from 2036 onward are estimated at around 55 billion tenge.

Another strategically important project is the creation of Kazakhstan's first potash fertilizer production facility based on the Satimola deposit, implemented by Qazaq Kalium LTD LLP. The project envisages the production of 1.5 million tonnes of finished product per year and will become the foundation for a new branch of the domestic chemical industry. Kazakhstan currently has no potash fertilizer production of its own, and domestic market demand is met through imports. The launch of the plant will establish domestic production, create more than 1,300 permanent jobs, increase the country's export potential, and strengthen Kazakhstan's position in the global mineral fertilizer market.

The development of mineral fertilizer production will also enhance the effectiveness of the state program "Keng Dala". State support for fertilizer procurement will simultaneously make fertilizers more accessible to Kazakh farmers and stimulate the development of domestic production, which will have a positive impact on crop yields and the country's food security.

Taken together, these projects will mark an important stage in the development of Kazakhstan's chemical industry, contributing to economic diversification, the creation of new high-tech production facilities, increased tax revenues, the growth of export potential, and the strengthening of the country's industrial independence.
