Timur Onzhanov, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of Baiterek Holding, took part in the Alatau City Roadshow in London as a member of the Kazakhstani delegation headed by Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev. During the visit, meetings were held with international financial institutions, banks and technology partners.
At the investment roundtable, Timur Onzhanov presented the Holding's opportunities for co-financing projects and supporting Kazakhstani enterprises that could become suppliers for new production facilities. The main focus was on developing the infrastructure, energy, industry and logistics of the new city of Alatau City, which is intended to become a hub for investment and advanced technologies.
“The Holding is ready to act as a Kazakhstani partner for British capital in the capacity of a borrower, guarantor and co-investor. We offer project support from the initial concept through to the launch of production. Our goal is to ensure that joint investments contribute to the development of processing industries and the creation of added value within Kazakhstan,” Timur Onzhanov noted.
Opportunities for attracting international capital were discussed at meetings with the management of the London Stock Exchange and representatives of Société Générale, J.P. Morgan and Standard Chartered, as well as with investors and strategic partners of Alatau City. At a meeting with Odile Renaud-Basso, President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the parties discussed cooperation in the energy and infrastructure sectors.
A separate area of focus was cooperation with the UK's export credit agency, UK Export Finance (UKEF). The roundtable addressed prospects for cooperation on Alatau City projects involving British suppliers of equipment, technology and engineering services.
At a separate meeting with UKEF, Timur Onzhanov presented arguments in favour of improving Kazakhstan's country risk classification under the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Such a revision could reduce the cost of export credit insurance coverage and make financing for Kazakhstani projects more affordable.
“The Holding is ready to underpin this cooperation with concrete transactions involving Alatau City projects, export credits through the Development Bank of Kazakhstan, as well as joint insurance and reinsurance arrangements with the Export Credit Agency of Kazakhstan,” he emphasized.
The programme also included meetings with the management of Magdalen College School and Waterleau. The parties discussed prospects for developing educational infrastructure and applying water treatment and wastewater purification technologies in Alatau City.
The Holding's further work with its partners will focus on developing financing instruments for infrastructure and new production facilities, as well as opportunities for Kazakhstani businesses to participate in these projects.
