On September 9–10, the 11th Belt and Road Summit was held in Hong Kong, organized by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in cooperation with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. Timur Onzhanov, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of JSC “National Investment Holding ‘Baiterek’”, represented Baiterek at the Summit. The Holding also presented its own booth at the event.
One of the key events in the Holding’s business program was a closed-door roundtable bringing together sovereign wealth funds from countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative and representatives of Hong Kong’s financial sector. In his address, Timur Onzhanov presented opportunities for cooperation with Baiterek as an anchor investor and strategic partner in implementing projects in Kazakhstan. The participants discussed joint investments, the expansion of portfolio companies into new markets, and capital raising through Hong Kong’s financial infrastructure.
The topic of expanding financial cooperation continued during a business discussion hosted by Standard Chartered Bank, dedicated to the internationalization of the renminbi and new opportunities for Central Asia. Representatives of the Holding also participated in a thematic session on Shanghai–Hong Kong cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.
“Direct settlements in renminbi allow companies to reduce conversion costs and better align the currencies of their expenses, revenues, and financing. The next step should be the development of a comprehensive financial infrastructure to support long-term projects,” said Timur Onzhanov.
On the sidelines of the Summit, Timur Onzhanov held meetings with representatives of leading international investment companies and business groups, including Siguler Guff, Primavera Capital Group, Full Vision Capital, Sunwah Group, Sino Group, and Templewater. The discussions focused on prospects for joint investments in infrastructure, logistics, industrial real estate, data centers, and green energy, as well as the implementation of industrial and urban development projects in Kazakhstan.
The visit also included meetings with representatives of the Oman Investment Authority, China International Capital Corporation, Invest Hong Kong, Hang Seng Indexes Company Limited, and the Hong Kong Asset Management Association.
As a result of the negotiations, areas for further development of joint projects and the attraction of long-term capital to Kazakhstan’s economy were identified.
