Education

In 1985, he graduated from Balliol College, University of Oxford, United Kingdom, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics.

In 1988, he obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree with distinction from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London (SOAS University of London).

In 1989, he completed his professional legal training at the Holborn Law Tutors, Bar Finals and at the Middle Temple, Call to the Bar.

Professional Experience

From 1990 to 1993, he worked as a legal assistant at Messrs. Shearn Delamore & Co.

From 1993 to 1994, he served as Corporate Finance Manager at Rashid Hussein Securities Sdn. Bhd.

From 1994 to 2004, he was a partner and subsequently Managing Partner of the law firm Zaid Ibrahim & Co.

From 2004 to 2013, he held a number of senior management positions at Commerce International Merchant Bankers Berhad and CIMB Group, including Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Executive Director, Deputy Chief Executive Officer responsible for Corporate and Investment Banking, and Chief Executive Officer of CIMB Investment Bank Berhad.

From 2013 to 2018, he served as Executive Director of Khazanah Nasional Berhad, as well as Managing Director and Trustee of the Khazanah Research Institute.

From 2018 to 2023, he served as Group Managing Director of Malaysian Industrial Development Finance Berhad (MIDF) and Chief Executive Officer of MIDF Amanah Investment Bank Berhad.

Since 2024, he is a Chairman of Export-Import Bank of Malaysia Berhad (EXIM Bank).

Since 2025, he is also a Chairman of Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Keluarga Berhad. He is a member of the Boards of Directors of Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad, Kuala Lumpur Business Club, Abi Capital Sdn. Bhd. and Titian Terang Sdn. Bhd. He also serves as a trustee of Yayasan Tuanku Fauziah and Yayasan Tuanku Syed Putra Perlis.

By the decision of the Sole Shareholder, pursuant to Order #160 of the Ministry of National Economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated 30 June 2026, he was elected as a member of the Board of Directors of Baiterek NIH JSC.

He does not own any shares in the Holding or any shares or ownership interests in legal entities that are suppliers or competitors of the Holding.
